ADR Certificate for Dangerous Goods Transports

Transporting dangerous goods presents a high risk for transport employees and uninvolved third parties. Flammable or toxic substances, mixed gases, explosives or radioactive material must not be handled by regular truck drivers. An ADR license is required for the transportation of dangerous goods on the road. The Hellmann Safety Solutions team offers basic and refresher courses with renewals, specialized advanced courses as well as training to become a Dangerous Goods Officer or EU Security Advisor.

What are dangerous goods?

Materials, solutions or products that present dangers to the general public, humans, animals or property are referred to as dangerous goods (ADR).

Who requires an ADR training certificate?

Companies that transport such goods and materials require qualified personnel. Professional drivers must therefore get an ADR license, to verify their knowledge. Only with this license may they transport dangerous goods on the road.

What do you need an ADR training certificate for?

The license relates to the agreement of the international transport of dangerous goods on the roads. This agreement contains different regulations for road freight transport.

This program covers the correct securing of loads as well as packaging and labelling hazardous goods. For example, ADR transportations are marked as such with orange-colored plates on the vehicle. The actual package is marked with a so-called danger label. In addition, placards provide exact information on the composition of the ADR and serve as an important source of information in the event of an accident.

Professional drivers with this training certificate know about the labelling and transport of dangerous goods and are trained in handling hazardous substances.

Acquiring the ADR training certificate

Whoever wishes to acquire the training certificate must enroll in an ADR basic course. A valid driving permit is required for vehicles intended for transport of dangerous goods.

The following content is covered in this course:

  • Regulations and dangerous goods laws
  • Dangerous properties of vehicles and transport types
  • Identification of dangerous goods
  • Departure checks, loading security and transport
  • Documentation of transportation of dangerous goods
  • Protective measures after accidents or other incidents.

Upon completion of the basic course, the participant must sit a written examination at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The training certificate remains valid for five years.

Renewal of the ADR training certificate

After five years, the training certificate expires and must be renewed. To ensure there is no delay, professional drivers can start their further training with the refresher a year before its expiry date. An exam at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry is also required here.

As well as the basis and refresher course, other specialized advanced courses are offered, such as navigating the transportation of tanks or explosive materials. The transportation of radioactive substances also requires a particular advanced course, which must be completed in addition to the basic course.
