Breakbulk Transport of Oversized Heat Exchanger from Japan to Canada for the Energy Sector

When complex routes, heavy equipment, and cross-border logistics intersect, expertise makes the difference. Hellmann developed and executed a fully integrated transport solution for an oversized heat exchanger, moving it seamlessly from Kobe, Japan to a project site in Alberta, Canada. The project demonstrates Hellmann’s capabilities in handling breakbulk cargo and coordinating international transport under tight timelines.

Starting Situation

A leading energy infrastructure company required the transport of a 9.16 m x 3.24 m x 3.59 m heat exchanger weighing 42,100 kg from a production site in Kobe, Japan to a project destination in Edmonton, Alberta. Initial plans involving a third-party carrier proved unworkable due to routing limitations and pre-carriage constraints at origin. The client needed a logistics partner able to take full control, resolve the bottlenecks, and provide a door-to-door solution — without risking delays or additional costs.

Solution

Hellmann stepped in with a tailored transport strategy. To enable direct breakbulk loading at the origin port in Kobe, a new carrier was secured, allowing for direct ocean freight to Tacoma, Washington. Upon arrival, the heat exchanger was offloaded and transferred to an 8-axle extendable lowbed trailer. With two escort vehicles, the cargo began its cross-border journey to Alberta — covering thousands of kilometers overland in just 3 to 4 days.

To maximize project efficiency and transparency, Hellmann provided value-added services including cargo insurance via a dedicated provider and live photo documentation at key transport stages. By clearly visualizing and communicating the end-to-end route, Hellmann helped the client understand how overland constraints impacted cost and scheduling — and turned those challenges into a strategic advantage.

This successful execution not only ensured the safe, timely delivery of a critical asset, but also laid the foundation for further cooperation on upcoming breakbulk projects.
