Why Hellmann moved 10,500 tons of construction conveyor equipment to Nacala Port, Mozambique
The Mozambique government is investing USD $ 500 million in a new railway linking the coal-rich province of Tete to the port of Nacala Mozambique. This logistics corridor is being developed to transport coal from some of the largest mines in the western province of Tete along a 912-kilometer railway route to the port of Nacala.
Starting Situation
The Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) known for its completion of the longest overland conveyor in Africa is contracted by a large mining house for the construction of the ports conveyor system. Their responsibility is for the delivery & construction of fifteen complete conveyor systems, including all mechanical and structural components.
Solution
Hellmann Project Cargo was awarded the shipping and delivery to Nacala of various cargos from South Africa and China including vessel charters. Scope of work included loading and lashing of abnormal cargos from ex suppliers as well as consolidation services via Hellmann Warehouse facilities.
In total 10,500 tons of construction conveyor equipment and some of the heaviest pieces included: 3 off conveyor magnets 18 tons each loaded on flat racks & 1170 Metric tons of conveyor belting on reels with specifically designed spiders and lifting arrangements. Some of the logistics challenges included securing suitably geared vessels ex Qingdao & Tianjin China to the port of Nacala, carrying both containers and break-bulk direct in Nacala port. In most instances, the breakbulk shipment had to be based on part charters and vessel port rotations altered to ensure timely delivery.
