Hellmann Globetrotter: Carolin Gnaub
Last year, she embraced an exciting opportunity through our IT & Digital international exchange program: One month in Costa Rica, contributing to a Generative AI project, followed by two months in Miami, supporting the regional marketing and sales team.
Hello Carolin, what made you decide to go to Costa Rica and Miami?
Carolin Gnaub: I've always been fascinated by the idea of living abroad, but I never had the chance during my studies. So I made it a goal to catch up on that experience during my career. When I saw the internal job posting for the exchange program, I applied right away. It felt like the perfect opportunity to finally make that dream come true and gain new perspectives.
When it all worked out, I was over the moon. But as the departure got closer, I suddenly thought, "Oh no, what did I sign up for? Help!" *laughs*
Did you find it easy to integrate into your new working environment and the new country?
Carolin Gnaub: Yes, it was surprisingly easy because my colleagues gave me such a warm welcome. In Costa Rica, I was picked up from the airport, invited to dinner, and shown as much of the beautiful country as possible. That made it really easy to settle in. Even though everything was new and different, their support made me feel at home right away and helped me adjust quickly to my new surroundings.
What did you miss most about home?
Carolin Gnaub: Even though I was filled with excitement and joy discovering new cultures, I did miss my friends and family - especially during holidays like Easter when I got photos and greetings from home. I also missed the summer events in Germany that I couldn’t take part in. Still, I knew my time abroad was limited, so I focused on making the most of every moment. And I truly did!
What did you like most about life in Costa Rica and Miami?
Carolin Gnaub: In Costa Rica, I loved the openness and warmth of my colleagues and the stunning natural surroundings. Experiencing the culture and the city, which were so different from what I expected, was truly eye-opening.
In Miami, I really enjoyed the mix of vibrant city life and being close to the ocean. In both places, my colleagues made a big impact - both professionally and personally - and turned my stay into something truly special. It was the perfect mix of nature, city, and inspiring people.
What did a perfect day off in Costa Rica or Miami look like for you?
Carolin Gnaub: In Costa Rica, a perfect day meant adventure—like snorkeling trips to nearby islands surrounded by stunning nature. I usually booked an activity and spent the day exploring.
Miami was a different vibe. I spent more time relaxing at the beach, enjoying the sunshine, and discovering the city by car. It was less active but just as enjoyable in its own way, with a laid-back atmosphere and lots to see.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add before we say goodbye?
Carolin Gnaub: Many colleagues had told me the people would be friendly, but I was still amazed by just how welcoming everyone was.
Being part of the exchange program and experiencing how Hellmann works in other regions was a great opportunity. I’m especially grateful to my team for their support - it made everything possible. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. A big thank-you to everyone who helped make this experience so special.
Thanks a lot for sharing your story with us, Carolin!
