Logistics Behind the Seams #11 - Sustainable Seafreight

Focus,  Sustainability

Hellmann Fashion Logistics recently concluded a pilot project that significantly reduced Scope 3 emissions for a leading global fashion brand. To uncover the success behind this initiative and its implications for sustainable fashion logistics, we spoke with our colleague Henry Meyer, Global Account Manager at Hellmann Fashion Logistics.

Journal interview Henry Meyer

Henry, sustainability is a growing priority in the fashion industry. Can you share more about this recent pilot project and why it’s so important for both the client and Hellmann?

Henry Meyer: Absolutely. This pilot project is a prime example of how logistics innovation can drive meaningful change. As part of the Hellmann Seafreight initiative, this sustainable sea freight solution combined our expertise in decarbonizing logistics with the tailored services of Hellmann Fashion Logistics.

We worked with one of our major fashion clients, a global leader in premium garments, to implement a carbon insetting solution for their sea freight operations. Over the course of 2024, we used insetting for their sustainable collection, utilizing Sustainable Marine Fuel (SMF) provided by our partner HMM. This allowed us to achieve a significant reduction in Scope 3 CO2e emissions, all without disrupting their operations.

What’s particularly exciting is how this project showcases the strength of collaboration. From the Seafreight team to our Fashion Logistics specialists, and with Sebastian Schultz leading the carbon insetting initiative, everyone worked seamlessly together to make this project a success. The great communication and teamwork were critical in delivering results for the client.

Scope 3 emissions are notoriously challenging to address. What made this project stand out?

Henry Meyer: Scope 3 emissions are indeed complex because they come from activities across the extended supply chain, which are often beyond the direct control of the company. What made this project stand out was its simplicity and effectiveness.

Through our collaboration with Hellmann Seafreight, we introduced the carbon insetting solution without requiring any operational changes. Shipments stayed on schedule, and the logistics processes continued as normal. The switch to SMF seamlessly replaced traditional fossil fuels, directly reducing emissions at the source. The client saw real results without compromising on efficiency - something that’s vital for the fast-paced fashion industry.

What were the key elements that ensured the success of this pilot project?

Henry Meyer: The success of this pilot came down to a few key factors: the Hellmann Seafreight initiative, which leveraged SMF to reduce emissions at the source, and the tailored approach from Hellmann Fashion Logistics that balanced sustainability with operational efficiency. Close collaboration with Sebastian Schultz and the Seafreight team ensured seamless execution, while our partnership with HMM made the solution economically viable. Detailed reporting also helped the client track their progress toward sustainability goals.

How do you see Hellmann’s role evolving as sustainability becomes a priority in the fashion industry?

Henry Meyer: Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword anymore - it’s a business imperative. At Hellmann, we’re committed to leading this shift by developing scalable, sustainable solutions that align with our clients’ operational goals.

The collaboration between Hellmann Seafreight and Hellmann Fashion Logistics is a perfect example of how we can drive innovation in a way that works for the industry. Whether it’s reducing emissions in sea freight, decarbonizing last-mile delivery, or exploring new technologies, we’re building a future where logistics actively contributes to environmental responsibility.

What advice would you give to other fashion brands looking to make their logistics more sustainable?

Henry Meyer: My advice would be to start small but start now. Sustainable logistics doesn’t have to mean overhauling your entire supply chain overnight. Partnering with a logistics provider like Hellmann, who understands the nuances of the fashion industry and has a proven track record in sustainability, can make a world of difference.

It’s also crucial to focus on solutions that integrate seamlessly into your operations, like our carbon insetting initiative. By taking practical, measurable steps, brands can make meaningful progress without compromising efficiency or delivery standards.

Thank you, Henry, for sharing these insights. It’s inspiring to see how Hellmann is helping the fashion industry embrace sustainability through collaboration and innovation.

Henry Meyer: Thank you. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved with this project. It’s a testament to what’s possible when teamwork, innovation, and sustainability come together. We’re excited to build on this momentum and help even more clients lead the way in sustainable fashion logistics.
