Category: Training and dual study program

How long does the training take?

Both the training and the dual study program generally take 3 years. The exception is the training to be a Warehouse Specialist (m/f/x) – this takes 2 years.

Do I have to go to school during the training?

Yes, dual training consists of the school section (in vocational school), where you will learn the theoretical basics, and the practical section (with us at the company), where you will learn the practical component. Whether you have block instruction or go to the vocational school one or two days a week will depend on the respective apprenticeship.

In the dual study program, do I have to go to the company as well?

Yes, a dual study program consists of the theoretical section, which takes place in the university, and the practical section, which you will complete with us at the company. In most dual study programs, there is block instruction, i.e. you will alternately spend a few months at the university, followed by a few months at the company.

When does the training or dual study program start?

Our training and the dual study program generally start on 1st August of every year.

Which apprenticeships are available at Hellmann?

You can find an overview of our apprenticeships here.

What does industrial or commercial training actually mean?

With us, industrial training refers to apprenticeships working in the warehouse or driving on the street, meaning Warehouse Specialists (m/f/x), Warehouse Logistics Specialists (m/f/x) and Professional Drivers (m/f/x)
Commercial training occurs primarily in the office, e.g. training to become a Freight-Forwarding and Logistics Services Assistant (m/f/x), but also IT apprenticeships or apprenticeship in office management

How good is the chance of being hired?

The chance of a permanent position at Hellmann is very good: Our goal is to retain all trainees and in this way to play a key role in shaping the company’s positive development. We will support you with our hiring concept so you are optimally equipped for professional life.

Can I also go abroad?

Yes, during your apprenticeship we will offer you a stay abroad, which can last up to three months. You can do this either within Europe or outside of it. This will be subsidized by ERASMUS+ (within Europe) or AusbildungWeltweit (outside Europe). During the dual study program, you can also spend a semester abroad at one of our many foreign locations during the practical phase as well as at most universities during the theoretical phase.
In the #azubisabroad Highlight on our Instagram channel, you will find insights from trainees who have already been abroad.

How many junior staff are there at Hellmann worldwide?

That depends on the number of junior staff per apprenticeship year, which always varies a little. On average, approx. 350 junior staff are working with us throughout Germany.

How much will I earn during training/in the dual study program?

That varies depending on the federal state, as there are different wage agreements and/or wage-oriented compensations here. In any case, you will receive a vacation and Christmas bonus with us everywhere, as well as a training grant and travel allowances if you are located far away from the vocational school.

How much vacation will I have?

This will also vary depending on the federal state, and generally depends on the wage agreement (currently between 25 and 30 days). In the first and last year you will receive vacation days on a pro-rata basis for the months you are in the company.

How long is my trial period?

With us, the trial period as a trainee or dual course student is 4 months.

How many hours will I have to work?

This will vary depending on the federal state. Weekly working hours vary between 38.5 and 40 hours.

Will the trainees be provided with work clothing?

That depends on the apprenticeship:
•    Industrial trainees: Full equipment, from safety shoes to cap
•    Commercial trainees: As needed

After discontinuing training or studies, is there still the opportunity to start a new course of training at Hellmann?

Yes, in principle this opportunity exists. Simply contact us so we can have a look together to see which path would be best for you. Or apply directly at hellmann.com/training_positions

Will I also get a training qualification in the dual study program?

Category: Application

Is there an application deadline?

No, there is no set deadline. The earlier you apply, the better your chances of being among the first people who are invited to a job interview. This increases the chance that you will get a training place.

Which requirements do I have to meet?

This varies depending on the apprenticeship. You can find the precise requirements under the respective job descriptions. Generally, however, your character and the overall picture are more important than school grades. It is important to us that you are a good fit with Hellmann as a person – and that we are a good fit with you.

I am not from Germany. Can I apply anyway?

We welcome everyone – therefore of course you can apply with us if you are not from Germany. The only important thing is that your application is complete and that you meet the requirements for the apprenticeship you have chosen. If you have any questions before completing your application, please contact our Advisor for Integration and Language: Jutta Oeltjendiers (jutta.oeltjendiers@hellmann.com).

What should my application look like?

Your application should include a cover letter with the following information:

  • Why are you interested specifically in this apprenticeship at our company?
  • Write something about yourself – what makes you who you are? What skills do you have to offer? This will enable us to form a better impression of you.

Additionally, your résumé is important, so we can see what you have done so far. Your résumé will not be very long, because so far you have mostly gone to school and possibly internships, but that’s OK. Please include the following things in your résumé:

  • Key data like your age, name, place of residence, nationality, contact data
  • School career
  • Internships/part-time jobs
  • Languages

Also attach your most recent transcript.

How does the job interview work?

Depending on the location and situation, we will conduct the job interview either digitally via Microsoft Teams or on site. In this interview you will receive information about the training, the training location and our benefits. In addition, we look forward to getting to know you. The conversation will be rounded off by individual tasks so that you can imagine yourself in the apprenticeship, as well as a final test in which you will be asked about various skills. For the industrial apprenticeships and, depending on the location, also for the commercial apprenticeships, we will also agree on a trial internship, during which you will experience first-hand what training with us is like.

The length and the content will differ depending on the apprenticeship, but one thing remains the same: First and foremost, we want to get to know you as a person and see together if it will work for both sides. This is more important to us than grades and certificates.

From our side, the junior staff advisor and representatives from the location will usually be present at the interview. This will allow you to ask all the questions you have and to get to know us.
